Norovirus is spreading like wildfire in Dublin hospitals. Two of the main city hospitals, Beaumont and St Vincent have reported of more than 100 cases of vomiting winter bug. This has led to blockage of hospitals beds in both the hospitals. About 40 beds in Beaumont Hospital have been put for quarantine, while 19 beds have been isolated at St Vincent.
This has led to an increase in the number of hospital waiting times. A spokesperson from St Vincent Hospital, said with every passing day, people are coming to the hospital fearing that they have contracted the virus. But they do not have enough beds to admit them.
This has led Dr. James Stacey of the Association of General Practitioners reveal that norovirus is not something which is only restricted to hospitals. It could spread in community in a few minutes. Moreover, widespread of norovirus infection in these two hospitals have come from public only.
The main thing is to make people aware of the problem. For which Stacey said if people want to recover fast from their illness then they should have water at regular interval of time and should adopt proper hygiene principal. The Health Service Executive also affirmed the same thing, "It is important for people to use good hand washing and other hygienic practices after they have recently recovered from norovirus illness".
Those who are already suffering from other problems like diabetes or heart problem should take extra care and should consult their respective GPs if their condition gets deteriorated.
Dr. Edmond Smyth, Consultant Microbiologist at Beaumont Hospital, said it is been for the first time in last many decades that norovirus has affected so many people. Last night only they have started treatment of 45 patients who got infected with norovirus.
