Cancer Research UK Reveals Mass Appeal of Sunbeds among Britons

There has been enough said about using sunbeds and the attached risk of skin cancer it apparently has, but it appears that many have overlooked the connection. It was found in a recent survey conducted by Cancer Research UK that there are many young people are using sunbeds after their loved ones told them to do so for enhancing their looks.

The survey involving 3000 UK adults revealed that out of the 176 sunbed users, all aged 18-24, nearly 40% were told by their friends and another 26% were suggested by their family to use sunbeds. It was found in the survey that nearly 53% of the ages from 18 to 24 are under the impression that tanned skin is more in fashion and that’s why they overlook the numerous warnings being given in the same context. In addition, nearly 60% are of the say that they first used the sunbeds when they were of the age of 18 or less than this.

Though the survey is not making any comment about the loved ones, it is being said that there is glaring level of unawareness about the subject.

There is need for people to know that there would be an increase of 75% in the risk of skin cancer if anyone above the age of 35 use sunbeds. There has been consistent rise in malignant cancer in the past 30 years in Britain, and perhaps that is why it has made the current situation so bad. Despite the facts in front, people have gone with sunbeds and thereby, they are putting themselves under the risk of skin cancer.

“We may all want to improve our appearance to help alleviate the mid-winter gloom, but sunbeds aren't the answer”, said Chris Lunn, SunSmart Campaign Manager at Cancer Research UK. There is still lot to be done to keep people away from sunbeds.
