There is no doubt left that the working conditions of workplaces must be kept safe and secure for workers there and that is what has been the main motto of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) since the beginning. On the same lines, it has been told that a man employed with JVM Castings Ltd, at their factory in Droitwich Road, had met with an accident. It was found that while Asim Qureshi was working there, molten metal poured out of the back of the machine and fell on him. The metal having temperature over 600 degrees Celsius caused the 41 years old man serious burn injuries to his leg, right arm, shoulder, and face.
The extent of the injuries was so much that he could not work for the next two months and even now, he has scary scars on his body parts. After taking the seriousness of the case into consideration, it was found that the accident could have been avoided had the company done enough to safe guard the health of the worker. The HSE found that the company was at fault for not providing suitable suit to the worker and even the die casting machine was not fully protected.
In consequent to the investigation, the company was found in violation of the Health and Safety at Work Act, and was made to pay £6,000 as fine to the affected one and further, £4,000 to the court.
“Despite three previous incidents, one of which caused serious injuries to another worker, JVM Castings failed to learn from them and did not follow the recommendations of its own investigation”, said HSE inspector Tariq Khan.
This is not for the first time that such accidents have happened. There have been many times when workers are made to work under unsafe working condition but some or the other way, they are being penalized for their deeds.
