It has been revealed that magic mushrooms would be an effective way to treat people suffering from depression. It has an active chemical known as Psilocybin, which would play a significant role in treating key regions of the brain.
The claim has come from two studies which have proved that the chemical is good for depression patients. The first study that got published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences involved 30 volunteers. The researchers from the Imperial College, London used the drug in the injection to check its activity n the blood flow.
The MRI scans revealed that the drug helped to lower the activity that takes place in hub areas in brain and also helps to ease off the pressure on the other connected parts of the brain.
The second study that has to appear in the British Journal of Psychiatry found that magic mushrooms helped people to revive their old happy memories. This led them to remain happy in the following days.
The study researcher, Carhart Harris, said, “This could be very useful in psychotherapy, for instance in people with depression who find it very difficult to remember good times and are stuck in the negative”.
Another researcher David Nutt has also claimed the same thing, but he was sacked out his job when he said that tobacco and alcohol are more harmful than cannabis, psychedelic drugs such as ecstasy and LSD.
However, now the scene has changed and he would soon be starting his clinical trials to prove the efficacy of the chemical. He is hoping that the drugs act as an alternative for those people who are not benefitted from antidepressants and behavioural therapy.
All the study researchers feel that they would have a tough time to convince people that such drugs are safe for them and better than conventional ones.
