There used to be a time when oldies would get diagnosed with diabetes, but now time has changed and so have the hosts of such disease. It is being said that nowadays even children are getting diagnosed with the disease at such an unimaginable age. Such is the case of Yolanda Acuna Ocana who was identified with the disease at the age of 14, after she lost significant weight and used to get tired easily.
At the age of 39, she died of the same. Her family would never have imagined that the disease would claim her life later. She left behind her partner alone with her family. There is common perception that the disease cannot claim any life, but there are many like Yolanda who succumbs to death later if they undermine the possible consequences of the disease.
“No one expects diabetes to kill someone so young in this day and age”, said Yolanda’s sister, Nicky Dixon, 38, a company director from Surbiton, Surrey. If facts are to be referred to, there are chances of life expectancy to get reduced by 20 years if one is diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.
The disease is caused when insulin level in the body starts reducing and this affects the blood sugar level to rise to significant level, thereby affecting the blood vessels. There are nearly 300,000 Britons suffering from this condition and are left with not many options but to get insulin injection regularly.
It was told that Yolanda had overlooked the need of taking injections seven times a day and perhaps this is what pushed her to death. If charity Diabetes UK is to be referred to, it is being said that one in three women under 30 with type 1 diabetes consciously skip taking the necessary dose of insulin.
There is need to take the severity of type 1 diabetes seriously else it could affect one’s health to a significant level.
