It has been reported that the cases of autism are increasing manifold. About one in 100 is said to be affected by autism. It has further come to light that the cases of Asperger’s syndrome are also on a high.
The revelation about the increased incidences of autism and Asperger’s syndrome was made by a study in which 7,400 participants were monitored. In the study, it was found that the chances of autism are higher among men as compared to women.
About one in 50 men is said to be affected by autism. However in women, only one is 300 is said to be affected by autism. The difference between the percentage of men and women being affected by autism is quite shocking.
For the past many years, the researchers had been carrying out research over autism but none of them was aware that it also has potential of affecting adults so severely. For long, it was believed that only kids are affected by it.
For the study, the researchers questioned men and women with the pursuit of picking up signs of autism. The ones found at higher risk of having autism were asked to take an extensive screening test.
In yet another research, the researchers contacted 300 adults who had difficulty in learning during their early days. When results of the two researches were combined, it was found that about 1.1% of the adults who suffered learning issues had autism.
The researchers have informed that the situation is same among children as well. The Chief Executive of The National Autistic Society, Mark Lever, said, “There has long been a tendency to view autism as solely a condition affecting children but this is the first study to find that the prevalence of autism is roughly the same for adults as it is for children”.
