It has been recently revealed in a report that Australian scientists are of the view that they shall soon make designer babies that would be more resistant towards life threatening diseases. They are of the view that these babies would be created with the help of three parent DNAs.
IVF specialists are of the view that this process of experiments might help them in the eradication of the mitochondrial mutations, which would in turn help them in preventing heart, muscle and multi-organ failures. This could be done with the help of replacing the defective genes with the healthy ones which will be donated.
This would mean that women who have some sort of genetic problems, wouldn't need to worry about passing them on to their children. It was revealed by Professor Peter Illingworth that this would include using three genes. He was further of the view that people need to understand this procedure well, as it would mean replacing the unhealthy genes with new healthy ones, and wouldn't seem to cause trouble to the genetic makeup of the child.
It was further added by him that the behavior of a person came from the genes and the appearance was determined by the nucleus of the cells, and not by the mitochondrion, as some may think.
He further said that the aim of this experiment was to be able to replace the bad mitochondria with the healthy one, with the use of IVF.
"We know women who have defective mitochondria pass that on to their children. About one child a week is born in Australia with a mitochondrial condition. It is rare but very debilitating", he said.
If this experiment is successful, it would help in making a huge difference to the area of science and would help many people in safeguarding the health of their children.
