It has been reported that a lion which was recently operated for testicular cancer is now recovering well. The lion was located at the Adelaide Zoo. The lion, Mujambi, was suspected of being suffering with testicular cancer two months back by a senior vet, Ian Smith.
Ian Smith informed that the lion had a reduced appetite which pushed him to conduct necessary cancer testes. He said, "At that time we took some blood samples. We'd run a few tests and it showed that he had quite high estrogen levels”.
It has been informed that the lion is 7 years old and weighs 160 kilogram. During medical examination of the lion, it was found that his one testicle descending. The vets got alarmed by tests as it showed that the lion might have developed testicular cancer.
About five years back, he was operated for the 'rogue testicle' detection. But the vets failed to diagnose it. As the estrogen levels are high in the lion, it shows that he has been affected with cancer. The vets are hopeful that after few years, the lion would recover.
Yesterday, a three hour operation was conducted to remove the descending testicle. It has been informed that Mujambi is the only male lion at the Adelaide Zoo. For past five years, the lion is being provided with medications to protect him from succumbing to kidney and liver diseases.
The vets are hopeful that after the yesterday’s surgery, Mujambi would make a complete recovery. Smith informed that it would take years for the lion to recover. He further informed that during the course of recovery changes in the body might not disappear. But the lion would definitely be happier and healthier.
