Fake Medicines Taking Toll on US

The production of fake drugs in the US has become a matter of concern, as reports have been received about firms running multibillion dollar business of producing counterfeit drugs. In the past, it was informed that fake cancer drug under the name of Avastin is being circulated in the US.

The authorities concerned are of the view that overseas production of drugs and medicines is one of the reasons behind the ongoing business of counterfeit medicines. The practice of producing counterfeit medicines is mainly present in poor countries where the ruling party doesn’t pay much heed to such activities.

Stricter regulation is the only way of avoiding the trade of fake drugs. The authorities are of the view that no steps are taken soon then, in the coming future, the health of the patients would be at risk.

Therefore, an investigation on the trade of fake Avastin drug has been called for by the Food and Drug Administration. It has been informed that the fake drug was made available for clinical use to 19 doctors and at 16 sites in California. Texas and Chicago also became a victim of the counterfeit medicine.

It has come to light that medicines like Viagra, cholesterol control medicine ‘Lipitor’ and weight lose medicine ‘Alli’ are also being counterfeited by fake firms. The Food and Drug Administration is making sure the health of the patients isn’t jeopardized by fake drugs.

Therefore, investigations would be made towards the ongoing illegal business of counterfeit medicines. It is shameful to know that patients having life-threatening diseases are being targeted by manufacturers of fake medicines. It is hoped that the Food and Drug Administration would be able to establish a control over the growing business of fake medicines.
