Parents Show Wrath Calling Sydney Hospital To Introduce System Reforms

Sydney Children's Hospital has again been a matter of discussion as it has been found to take more than three years to roll out reforms in its system. It is being said that the hospital showed carelessness in treatment of two young children previously, who died later.

As per the report, it has been found that the changes introduced in the official system of the hospital after a significant long time has become the reason of anger of parents of the children. The previous reports had showed that insertion of wrong sized catheters in children become the reason of their deaths at small ages.

It had been revealed earlier that a child, Joshua Elliott, merely one month in age, died on September 9, 2009, allegedly due to non-availability of a preferred size catheter tube that was to be fitted in his neck. The tube was found to have perforated his jugular vein, which further caused a nutritional fluid to leak into his chest, leading to his death.

Apart from the case, another case of cardiac arrest happened in the hospital and that too was the result of implantation of a catheter into his arm for treating an eye infection that he had been suffering from. It is being said that 10 months old Tama Galiere died of cardiac arrest in the hospital after 15 months of the death of Joshua on June 25, 2008.

The report has found that the hospital has announced reforms in the system, which has been the reason of outrage among the parents of the children. The hospital is being recommended by the Deputy State Coroner Scott Mitchell that it should be recording details of discussions with parents. Besides, it should also carry out a fact sheet so as to provide parents with detailed information about catheter procedures and the risks related to the same, thereby preventing any future controversies.
