GIT Develops Tongue Drive System
GIT Develops Tongue Drive System

As per recent reports, it has been revealed that a group of researchers from the Georgia Institute of Technology (GIT) has prepared the Tongue Drive System (TDS), which will help quadriplegics to move their gadgets and life supporting systems with it.

The gadget is a wireless and wearable device which will be worn under the upper palate in the mouth. Maysam Ghovanloo, who is an Associate Professor of electrical and computer engineering at GIT, told that they have developed the device keeping one thing mind that tongue is the only thing, which is under the control of a person, who has suffered four limb paralysis.

With the use of the gadget, people suffering from severe spinal cord injuries will be able to operate their computers and electric movable wheel chairs. Magnets are used in the device which with the use of the tongue will do everything as per the direction of people.

It is not the first time that GIT has tried to develop it. Earlier also they have developed the TDS, which was worn externally as a headset, but the negative fact about the device was that whole headset got disrupted with the change in the movement.

Such disturbances will not happen in the latest developments, assure Ghovanloo. He further affirmed that the system is fitted inside, so there are least chances for the system to get disrupted.

"Because the dental appliance is worn inside the mouth and molded from dental impressions to fit tightly around an individual's teeth with clasps, it is protected from these types of disturbances”, said Ghovanloo.

Clinical trials have also been done and it has been proved that the users faced no complications in learning the system. They were able to operate the system and were able to overcome little hurdles that came in their way.
