Online Program Effective In Treating Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

A recent study has found that web-based treatment for the chronic fatigue syndrome is much effective as compared to the other treatments provided to the patients. The findings of the study have been published in the Lancet journal.

The study was conducted by the researchers of the University Medical Centre in Utrecht. During the study, the researchers found that about 63% of the patients were benefited by the web-based treatment.

A program called Fitnet was launched for the study. As many as 135 teenagers took part in the study. All of them were suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome. The cause behind the syndrome isn’t certain. However, it has been found that cognitive behavioural therapy could be helpful in easing the agony of the patients.

Therefore, as a part of the program, the participants of the study were provided with face-to-face cognitive behavioural therapy online and skilled therapist used to email the strategies to deal with the chronic fatigue syndrome.

During the study, it was found that the response of the patients was good and the therapy helped the patients to recover from the syndrome. The study continued for a period of six months.

The participants of the study noted that the therapy had helped them in avoiding fatigue. About 82% of the participants said that during the course of program they didn’t experience fatigue.

The researchers found that the Fitnet, as compared to other treatments and therapies, is much effective in curing the chronic fatigue syndrome. While commenting upon the study, Professor Peter White of Barts and the London School of Medicine together with Trudie Chalder from King's College London said, “They have added to an increasing evidence base which shows that therapist-aided, internet-based cognitive behavioural therapy is an effective treatment for many similar disorders”.
