March is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month

March is celebrated as Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, and ovarian cancer is said to be the most difficult cancer to get detected. This may be the reason that it is the fifth most common cancer in the UK. As said, it is a very rare form of cancer and women are not able to know about it easily.

Experts said that ovarian cancer is quite different from other cancers, as 90% of women who have been suffering from it do not witness any cancer symptom. It has also been found that majority of the women, who have been suffering from it do not have family history of it.

Some of the peculiar symptoms of ovarian cancer are continuous stomach ache, bloating and swelled legs, and frequent and painful urination. According to the charity Target Ovarian Cancer, there are more than 6,500 women in Britain who have been diagnosed with ovarian cancer and 4,400 women have already lost their lives due to the cancer.

The UK is lagging behind in the race of improved survival rate. As per the charity, the UK has just 36% survival rate, which is termed to be the lowest in the UK. The government was of the view that they have been making efforts to improve the survival rate and they have got little success as well.

In addition, a study was also being conducted on ovarian cancer. The study revealed that the main reason for poor survival rate of women suffering from ovarian cancer is late diagnosis. The study recommended that steps should be taken to improve the rate of ovarian cancer survival rate.

It is recommended that if women find any of the above symptoms then they should immediately contact their respective GPs. Generally, women delay the checkups and it is said to be their biggest mistake of their life.
