Abortion: Who Has The Right To Choose?

Abortions have always been a point of contention among the masses, which some anti-abortion campaigners lobbying to even outlaw it altogether. The law of abortions in the UK has also seen its share of misdirection. The law itself has some irregularities. While adjudicating the women's right to choose, it does not give the woman the right to make her own decision and putting the verdict in the hands of two doctors. Moreover it is not universal all across UK.

The law which was enacted in 1967 has undergone many attempts to alter it depending on the changing times, but all the efforts have been stalled by the anti-abortion lobbyist.

By the department of health have some more issues in its agenda to deal with. There has been a gradual increase in illegal abortions, in which doctors have been found to create false documents to abort a child based on it gender. There are reports that as many 20% of nearly 250 clinics that were inspected have been carrying out abortions on the basis of authorizations signed by doctors who had no connection with the patient.

The Health Secretary, Andrew Lansley, has a lot of answering to do after these reports emerged. Now, the department has decided to come down hard on all those practitioners who perform these illegal activities. Also, there is a dire need sought to amend the laws, which do not favor the women's right to choose. The law should be straightforward. Either a women should have all the right to choose the fate of her fetus or not. The women should be treated as the autonomous individuals that they are. There should be necessary check and balances in place to ensure that these practices are curbed.
