Sitting Long Could Cause Premature Death, say Researchers

These days, sedentary jobs are in demand. Sitting for long hours in front of the computer while juggling myriad set of files have become part and parcel of life. However, there are a few who actually pays heed to exercising and physical activities.

A recent study has found that suiting for long hours can minimize the quality of life and could lead to premature death. The study was conducted by Australian researchers. During the study, the researchers found that people tend to die at least three years earlier because of long sitting jobs.

For the study about 222,000 were recruited. During the study, the researchers found that those who tend to be seated for at least 11 hours a day are at the risk f succumbing to death prematurely. The findings clearly suggest that people should pay attention to the physical activities as well.

The findings of the study have been published in the medical journal Archives of Internal Medicine. The lead author of the study, Dr. Hidde van der Ploeg, was reported as saying, “That morning walk or trip to the gym is still necessary, but it’s also important to avoid prolonged sitting. Our results suggest the time people spend sitting at home, work and in traffic should be reduced by standing or walking more”.

The study was followed up for five years. About 5,400 deaths among the participants were reported during the study. The deaths have been linked to poor physical activity and prolonged sitting hours.

The people have been advised to pay attention to their physical activities and on exercising. Previous studies have linked long sitting hours with obesity. Obesity is yet another cause of early death as it leads to life threatening diseases.
