Mysteries behind Cleft Lip and Palate to be Unveiled

It has been reported that foundation of creating world’s largest research databank for cleft lip and palate has been laid in the UK. The databank thus developed will look at the causes which trigger the diseases. Cleft lip and palate is a birth defect which affects a large number of kids all over the world.

In the UK alone, 1,200 kids are born with the disorder every year. The researchers are of the view that with this step they would be able to untangle the mysteries behind the diseases. Besides, parents and kids who have been affected with the disorder have been asked to take part in the program and to help researchers better understand the defect.

It has been unveiled that £11m for a period of five years would be invested by the authorities for the success of the program. The researchers in the coming time would be seen contacting people with the disorder and collecting the DNA of the children affected with the disorder.

During the research, the researchers would also pay heed to the treatment and medication which could help in curing the disorder effectively. It has been informed that in cleft disorder, the two parts of the face of the child doesn’t join together as they should do. The defect occurs at the time when baby is growing in the womb.

Prof Jonathan Sandy from the Bristol gene bank was reported as saying, “Children born with cleft often face unique challenges. These include speech and language issues, educational difficulties and broader health concerns”.

The researchers are not sure whether or not the defects are caused by gene mutation. It is hoped that the research would help them in understanding the cause of the disease and would also help in creating effective treatment for the disorder.
