Results of Albiglutide Studies Are Satisfying, Says Glaxosmithkline PLCs

On Tuesday, GlaxoSmithKline PLCs informed that seven results out of eight 'Harmony' Phase III studies have showed that the drug albiglutide is beneficial for patients affected with Type 2 diabetes.

The drug is being investigated by GlaxoSmithKline PLCs. If the drug passes the investigation, then it might be made available for clinical usage by the Food and Drug Administration.

It has been informed that a patient suffering with type 2 diabetes is required to take the albiglutide drug once in a week. During the investigation, the drug was compared with the preprandial insulin.

It has come to light that the administration of the drug for a period of 26 weeks helped in reducing HbA1c from baseline and non-inferiority versus preprandial lispro insulin. The researchers studying over the drug informed that as compared to preprandial lispro insulin, the albiglutide significantly reduced the level of HbA1c from baseline among the patients affected with type 2 diabetes.

The detailed information about the findings of the studies has not been made public yet. Following the announcement by GlaxoSmithKline PLCs, the shares of the company closed at GBP14.29.

The health experts are of the view that the drug holds potential of comforting the type 2 diabetes patients. Type 2 diabetes is a deadly disease which affects millions of people all over the world.

The type 2 diabetes is a slow killer which affects the organ of the patients slowly and leads to disability. The disease is hard to cure. It is believed that obesity and poor lifestyle are two main reasons behind a person being affected with it. It is hoped that albiglutide would prove to be an effective treatment for type 2 diabetes. However, studies would be conducted over the drug till 2013.
