Novel Osteoporosis Genes Discovered

As per a research which has been published in the journal Nature Genetics, it has been revealed that double the amount of known genes in osteoporosis has been discovered. The world’s largest study ever being done on osteoporosis genes, will now help researchers to develop more effective treatments for the disease.

The researchers from the University of Queensland Diamantina Institute played a major role in detecting the genes in 56 different variant genomes. Among the total number, 14 newly discovered genes were said to be increasing the risk of bone fracture.

Lead researcher Dr. Fernando Rivadeneira, from the Erasmus Medical Centre in Rotterdam, said that they have also found some other genes, which needs strong bone-building drugs.

Co-author Dr. Douglas Kiel, from the Harvard Medical School in the Unites States, said that women, who are more than 65 years of age, are at increased risk of being diagnosed with osteoporosis and main body part which is at risk is hip bone.

Kiel further affirmed that it is not the first time that it has been found that the disease is genetically determined. It has been said repeatedly that osteoporosis largely depends on genes and for a long time the genes causing it were not known.

In order to reach at the above given result, the study authors enrolled more than 80,000 individuals with the Bone Mineral Density problem. They also enrolled 30,000 such individuals who had suffered fractures and 100,000 were in control group.

“We also established that, as compared to women carrying the normal range of genetic factors, women with an excess of BMD-decreasing genetic variants had up to 56 per cent higher risk of having osteoporosis and 60 per cent increased risk for all-types of fractures”, said study authors.
