Doctor of Rapper Kanye West’s Mother Surrenders Medical License

According to the Medical Board of California, Dr. Jan Adams, the plastic surgeon who performed surgery on rapper Kanye West's mother a day before she died has surrendered his medical license. Medical Board spokeswoman Candis Cohen said, "A series of complaints were filed against Mr. Adams, but he chose to surrender his license instead of contest them."

The Medical Board of California sought to revoke or suspend Adams' license because of multiple alcohol-related convictions. His license to practice medicine had already been suspended since June 25, 2008 and he was denied the opportunity to renew his medical license due to his failure to comply with a family support order, of child support. His record also shows at least four malpractice judgments against him between 2001 and 2007.

Adams was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving in Solano County a day after the suspension. With a blood-alcohol level of more than 0.08% he pleaded no contest and began a yearlong sentence in Solano County Jail on Feb. 6. In January 2008 Coroner's officials ruled that Donda West, 58, "died from some preexisting coronary artery disease and multiple postoperative factors following surgery." Although "there was no evidence of a surgical or anesthetic misadventure," the report found that "multiple post-operative factors could have played a role."

According to a source familiar with the probe, late last year, state officials began investigating her nephew, a registered nurse who oversaw her recuperation after her plastic surgery. "As far as I'm concerned ... at least the autopsy report suggests nothing went on during surgery, nothing went on during recovery," Adams told Larry King in Jan. 2008.

Adams, 54, a Harvard graduate became well known as a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon after making appearances on TV's Extra, the Discovery Channel, and The Oprah Winfrey Show, among others.

The surrender of Adams license means he can no longer practice medicine in California. Under State law Adams is permitted to reapply for his license in three years, but he would need to prove that he has remedied his drinking problem to be granted a new license.
