Novel Technique to Treat Spinal Injury

As per a research being taken out at École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), it has been revealed that a new technique has been developed which is able to treat spine injury.

The research was initiated in 2007, and it was found that spinal injury can be treated if its intelligence and regenerative capacity is awakened. Lead researcher said Grégoire Courtine, was of the view that they researched a lot on spinal injuries and found that under certain conditions, plasticity can take place even in chronic cases.

In order to test their hypothesis, they conducted an experiment on rats in which injected a chemical solution of monoamine agonists to rats, which have injured their back. "This cocktail replaces neurotransmitters released by brainstem pathways in healthy subjects and acts to excite neurons and ready them to coordinate lower body movement when the time is right”, said the study researchers.

After giving the injection, the study researchers electrically stimulated the spinal and in order to do that, they used electrodes at the uppermost layer, which is known as the epidural space.

The electrical stimulation supplied the chemical to neurons and helped in controlling the leg movement. The experiment has given hope for paralyzed people that they will also be able to walk again.
