Elderly Should Drink Coffee to Strengthen Muscles, Researchers

It has been revealed in a new report that caffeine can play a vital part in strengthening the muscles of older people.

While muscles usually tend to become weak with age, thereby contributing to low quality of life, it is being said that older people now not need to worry. Since, daily tasks can be made easier to be carried out just by having a cup of coffee daily.

As per the team of researchers from the Coventry University, coffee consumption not only strengthens one’s muscles, but also makes them less prone to falls or injuries.

The team had conducted a study on a group of mice who were fed with caffeine, which revealed that two particular muscles in elderly adults acted powerfully. The first one was the diaphragm, which is used for respiration and the other was the extensor digitorum longus (EDL), helping in locomotion.

On the other hand, developing mice could not realize any such powerful effect on their muscles. It has been told that the stimulant is not only present in coffee but also many other soft drinks.

'With the importance of maintaining a physically active lifestyle to preserve health and functional capacity, the performance-enhancing benefit of caffeine could prove beneficial in the aging population', says lead author Jason Tallis.
