Ovarian Transplants Changing the Life of Women

Gone are the days when women used to give priority to motherhood. These days, the career oriented girls are keen in delaying their pregnancies. Recently, a renowned surgeon has prognosticated that in the coming time women would be seeking ovarian transplant to delay the menopause.

The advancement in the medical science has made it possible for men to save and donate their sperms and similarly women also have been provided with the option of saving their ovaries so that they could enjoy motherhood later in their life.

In 2007, the news of ovarian transplanted splashed on newspapers and online networks leaving shockwaves to the readers. The transplant was carried out in the US over twins. One of the twins became infertile and therefore opted for ovarian transplant.

However, cancer patients are also provided with the ovarian transplant. Girls and women going through cancer treatment carry the risk of turning infertile. Therefore, the ovarian transplant helps them in retaining their power of conceiving. The drugs used in the cancer treatment, sometimes, damages the ovaries.

Dr. Silber from the Infertility Center of Saint Louis said, "Transplanted ovarian tissue can robustly restore menstrual cycles and fertility and may even in the future be used to postpone the normal time of menopause or to alleviate its symptoms".
