The Department of Health has extended the date of implementation of plain packaging scheme with the aim of getting everyone’s opinion. The scheme has been formed so that young minds could be prevented from falling into the traps of smoking.
It has been found that tobacco manufacturers use attractive advertisement techniques to gain the attention of the people. The use of colorful packaging, display of brand and attractive slogans has been found on the packaging of tobacco, which attract customers.
Besides, celebrity endorsement of the product has made it a luxury. However, tobacco taken in any form has been deemed to be hazardous for health. Therefore, the concept of plain packaging was recommended, which would make it difficult for the tobacco manufacturers to attract more consumers.
The Public Health Minister, Anne Milton, said, “Health ministers across the UK have a responsibility to… reduce the number of young people taking up smoking and assist existing smokers who are trying to quit”. The World Health Organization is also helping the ministers all over the world in limiting cigarette smoke. Previous studies have link smoke to health complications like lung cancer and mouth cancer. It is hoped that through the initiative of the government many lives would be saved.
