Ministers to Decide Today Over Health-related Claims by Experts

It seems that Australia will soon become the victim of diet-related diseases and obesity epidemic, fears heart and cancer experts in the country, who, with the same concerns have requested the ministers to not pass on any favor to food industry regarding their health claims.

Food ministers will make their decision today whether they will soften curbs on misleading health claims of food industry or the group will face some stricter actions.

In their last minute appeal of yesterday to the concerned ministers, heart and cancer experts have clearly urged them to not favor any of the food industry’s demands to follow lighter regulations governing general health claims of their products.

In his statement, Cancer Council Australia Chief Executive Mr. Ian Olver overturned the proposals for independent, pre-market verification of claims. He said ''this could be a disaster at a time when Australia faces a surge of diet-related cancer incidence and when we are urgently encouraging consumers to make healthier food choices''.

He explained that the consumers have faith in their governments that all the products that are being served with have been minutely crossed checked and independently verified for their claims and their purposes as well.

Thus, professionals are supporting the idea of informing consumers with the best food choices, which they believe, will serve in reducing the number of illnesses from the region.
