Allergen Labeling Takes Place in Canada

Food allergen labeling regulations was announced in Canada, in the month of February in 2011. The food regulation gave the food manufacturing firms a time period of 18 months to bring in the labeling system. On 4th of August, the labeling system has finally been introduced.

As per the new labeling system, the food manufacturing firms need to label food allergens, gluten sources, and sulphites on the packing. Until now, many consumers have battled to know the actual ingredient of the food products.

However, previous studies have found that even after providing customers labeling on the food packaging, they fail to understand as to what food product should be consumed and in how much quantity. It has been found that about 47% of the consumers are affected with allergies after consuming food products without labeling.

In 2008, it was proposed that food products should be labeled. However, it took years to the government to turn the proposal into a new regulation. Countries like Australia and New Zealand are already using labeling system to empower the consumers. It is hoped that the recent labeling system in Canada will also help in empowering the consumers. Allergen labeling is becoming global concern as many countries are getting the allergen labeling system established.
