Differences in Services Provided By PCTs to Stroke Patients in Essex

NHS officials while assessing stroke services being provided throughout the area discovered that those of the stroke sufferers' residents of Southend, Rochford and Castle Point are able to avail the life-saving drugs, twice as quick as that by the sufferers in Basildon or Thurrock.

The officials revealed that due to that Primary Care Trusts of South East Essex area, 15% of the patients are provided with the specifically designed clot-busting drugs within three hours after getting a stroke. However, in case of South West Essex Primary Care Trust patients, only 7% of them are able to avail the drugs within the three hours period.

As per NHS set guidelines, these PCTs are liable to treat almost 12% of such stroke ridden patients within three hours. Further, it was highlighted that the South East Essex PCTs assist 74% of the patients with brain scanning within one hour of the stroke, in comparison to 32% by South West Essex PCTs. In this case, guidelines suggest a target of about 50%.

Both Basildon and Southend hospitals have been developed with stroke facilities. However, the reputation of both is not similar. Southend hospitals are famous for their work in this filed. These differences are being considered to improve the medical services provided to stroke sufferers across the area.
