Mercury Harmful for Human Nervous System, Says Study

As per a recent research, it has been revealed that the two components being found in fish have completely opposite effect on the health of people. The two compounds, mercury and omega-3 fatty acids, have conflicting effects on a person's heart, revealed a study being published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Researcher Maria Wennberg from Umeå University, Sweden, was of the view that mercury has a negative effect on heart. Meanwhile, omega-3 fatty acid is said to be beneficial for the health of people. It has become vital to make sure that fish oil, which one consumes is not high in mercury, affirmed Wennberg.

In order to do that one has to reduce the intake of fish, like one should give preference to non-predatory fish, which includes salmon, over predatory fish, which is shark, swordfish and tilefish. Reason to do the same is that predator fish is considered to be the top members of the marine food chain. Henceforth, mercury is in their tissues and can cause more harm to body.

Consumption of mercury is said to be quite harmful for a person's nervous system, warns the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency. This is the reason that the agency has warned young women to avoid eating predator fish, as it can have toxic effect on their children's brain.
