Report Highlights Shocking Suicidal Rates

These recently revealed suicidal figures are shocking. Since the past one year, a rise of 40% has been seen in suicidal rates amongst youth. Astonishing is to come across figures, which demonstrate the suicides committed by those below the age of nine, which has been reported for the first time.

The initial statistical reports published by Coronial Services Unit today highlighted that 80 people aged 15-19 years committed suicide over a year from last June. The previous year’s total was accounted to be 56.

Moreover, in case of Maoris’ of the same age group, suicides committed were encountered to be 37, up from 21.

It was emphasized that young children aged between five and nine years also were amongst those who took their own lives. Officials said, “It was the youngest suicide since the Ministry of Justice unit started collecting data in 2007 but refused to reveal further details due to the sensitivities around the case”.

Further, the figures suggested that there is a rise in suicides in Christchurch region, West Coast and in Marlborough.

Although, suicides have declined amongst those aged between 50 and 74, in case of those unemployed, the rate is still high. Chief Coroner Judge Neil Maclean asserted the issue is a major concern, but there is no specific way out.
