Report Proposes Neglect Charges Against Parents whose Kids meet with Accidents

Findings in a recent report released by Federal Government's Institute of Family Studies suggest that a majority of parents, who can be seen in emergency departments with their children injured, are actually to be held responsible for negligence towards their child.

The report urges child protection workers to include such children under the category of neglected children. However, two politicians, who are also fathers, are not in favor of the proposal.

Shadow Treasurer Joe Hockey suggests a few alternatives, which could be beneficial for these children, including helmets and shin-pads, which can guard them against injury and also help them enjoy climbing trees and moving around.

On the other hand, Environment Minister Tony Burke asserted that children should be allowed to enjoy their childhood the way they wish to; they should not be restricted from playing and messing around.

However, it is the responsibility of the parents to keep a watch on their kids. Children, who are more often injured, be it minor or major, is due to improper supervision of their parents. Hence, report proposes neglect charges for parents whose children visit hospitals too often. However, child psychologists said, "Such a crackdown would just promote over-parenting".
