Scientists Find Most Unpleasant Sound

From their recent research, scientists are claiming to have found the most unpleasant sound as all the volunteers in their study pointed the same sound as the most terrible one to hear.

Scientists from Newcastle University in the UK ran a study and included 13 volunteers in same, to test their reactions to all the 74 different noises that they arranged in an effort to get to know which sound seems to be the most unpleasant ones to the humans and which others do they find pleasant to hear.

They produced several sounds and noticed that the sounds produced from fingernails on a chalkboard, screeching tires and also the sound of an animal dying were among the favorites of the group. Whereas, on the other hand, sound produced by scraping a sharp knife against a glass bottle was the most unpleasant and disliked one.

The Guardian in the UK reported that during the above tests, the researchers closely studied the reaction of all the volunteers from their outward response and also the small changes that occurred in their brain.

They noticed that the noises which fell within the frequency range of 2,000 to 5,000 Hz, were said to be the worst ones by the volunteers.

"If you have a sound in this frequency band it produces a heightened response. The ear is very sensitive in this acoustic spectrum", said paper's author Dr. Sukhbinder Kumar.
