Organic Tomatoes Are Richer in Vitamin C but are Exposed to More of Stress, Stud

It's time to go organic but in a recent study, organically grown oranges have been claimed as stressful.

In a recent study, it has been proved that organic tomatoes are richer in vitamin C; they consist of high sugars and pigment molecules like lycopene, an anti-oxidant, as compared to those grown in a conventional manner. And due to this, people eating organic oranges are exposed to increased levels of stress.

An explanation behind this is that when pesticides and fertilizers are sprayed on non-organic tomato crops, they provide a protective barrier against pests but in case of organic tomatoes, they are left to fight for themselves. As a result, they experience more stress and their antioxidants concentrations increase for their protection.

To carry out this study, team led by Maria Raquel Alcantara Miranda and colleagues from the Federal University of Ceara, Brazil, analyzed and compared the nature and biochemical properties of tomatoes that were grown in organic and conventional farms.

They also found organically grown tomatoes to be smaller in size by almost 40% but even then, these had more vitamin C and other beneficial compounds. Nutrients present in them were more powerful because they were exposed to fight harder for survival.
