The "free" adjective that is associated with the awesome Hulu.com site, may soon partly disappear into oblivion! As per the most recent announcement by Jonathan Miller - News Corps.'s chief digital officer - Hulu may, sooner than later, start charging for some online content. Since News Corp owns a large part of Hulu, the decision to charge for content would probably be round the corner!
Presently, the advertising revenue generated by the site supports its functioning; enabling it to provide a wide array of full TV episodes, movies, and video clips. However, the total revenues generated are far too less, as against to conventional TV advertising. Most habitual Hulu users often see a lot of ads for charities that Hulu ordinarily rotates when it falls short on its ad inventory.
In fact, the existing Hulu model is a blessing for the users who watch high-quality content on demand with just one-odd advertisement each commercial break. Since the proposed plan about charging for content does not suggest that the complete site would be pay-per-view - there would still be some programs that may not be included in the new scheme.
Catching the implicit hint underlying Miller's speech, Daily Finance said that Miller is looking at creative ways to package News Corp. content with other offerings, thereby creating a persuasive wrap up that people will pay for!
