FDA issues warning about Zicam Cold Remedy nasal gel and related products

Matrixx Initiatives

Matrixx Initiatives' Zicam Cold Remedy nasal gel and related products have come under the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) scanner, on concerns that the zinc- containing intranasal products can lead to long-lasting or permanent anosmia - or loss of the sense of smell.

According to the FDA's Tuesday warning about the Zican Cold Remedy products, scientists opine that the presence of zinc in the Zicam over-the-counter products may damage smell-specific nerves in the nose. The FDA said that since 1999, nearly 130 consumers have reported a loss of smell after using the Scottsdale, Arizona-based Matrixx Initiatives' Zicam products.

As per the warning issued by FDA, the products in question - Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel, and the adult and kid-size Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs - can be considered as "misbranded their labels of the products do not carry warning about anosmia risk.

Talking about the problems associated with anosmia, Dr. Charles Lee, of FDA's Office of Compliance, said: "People without the sense of smell may not be able to detect dangerous life situations, such as gas leaks or something burning in the house."

Meanwhile, though Matrixx has defended the safety of its 'contentious' products, it has, based on the FDA warning, not only suspended the shipments of these products, but has also said that it will refund any customer desiring a money back.
