US Dept. of Transportation has agreed to the requests of Continental Airlines Inc. to coordinate flights abroad with United Airlines and eight other carriers.
Apart from United Airlines, Continental Airlines Inc., the fourth-largest U. S. carrier will coordinate flights with Air Canada, Austrian Airlines, British Midland, Lufthansa, LOT Polish, Scandinavian Airlines, Swiss International, and TAP Air Portugal.
Under the Transportation Department's current decision, Continental Airlines Inc. will jointly plan policies over pricing, flight-schedules etc.
The coordination of flights will pave the way for the companies to share passengers and enhance revenue.
According to the Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood the decision of the department would benefit consumers, boost competition and save jobs in the airline industry.
However, the Justice Department had opined that the coordination among flights would harm consumers on routes between the U. S. and China, Canada, Denmark, Portugal, Sweden and Switzerland, as well as inside the domestic U. S. market.
