Somali refugee sets herself on fire at Australian immigration camp on Nauru
Latest reports showed that a refugee from Somaliset herself on fire at an Australian immigration camp located in neighbouring Pacific island nation of Nauru. The 21-year-old woman from Somali was critically injured after she set herself on fire. The woman was flown 4,500 kilo-meters from Nauru to Brisbane in Australia on Tuesday after she set herself on fire on Monday, according to the releases from Nauru and Australia governments.
Refugee Action Coalition spokesman Ian Rintoul said that the woman was also flown earlier to Brisbane for treatment for head injuries in Nauru in the month of November. She was taken from Brisbane immigration detention center and was flown back to Nauru
The incidence comes three days after an Iranian refugee died of injuries after a similar self-immolation attempt on the camp. A 23 year old man from Iran died at the same Royal Brisbane Hospital on Friday after a similar protest two days earlier. The self-immolations are to protest the Australia's strict asylum seeker policies. His actions were to coincide with a visit to the island by representatives of the UN refugee agency.
Australian Immigration Minister Peter Dutton said, "Both patients have received the utmost care, treatment and consideration both in Nauru and in Australia."
