Saying that its April-June quarter results have been "significantly affected" by charges totaling 2.3 billion Swiss francs, Switzerland's leading bank UBS AG Wednesday reported a 1.4 billion Swiss francs loss for the quarter.
The bank's charges during the quarter included 1.21 billion Swiss francs on own debt; 582 million Swiss francs on restructuring; and 492 million Swiss francs associated with sale of Brazilian investment bank Banco Pactual.
While the reported second-quarter loss by UBS was notably higher than the loss of 395 million Swiss francs for the same quarter last year, and slightly more than the average analyst expectations of a loss of 1.32 billion Swiss francs; it marked a marginal improvement over the first quarter loss figures of 2 billion Swiss francs.
In addition, UBS' second-quarter operating income soared 45 percent to 5.77 billion Swiss francs from last year's 3.98 billion Swiss francs.
The Zurich-based bank, which maintained that it was "well placed to deal with the challenges of the current economic environment," and has written down over $50 billion in illiquid assets, will be in limelight yet again on Friday when it is expected to specify is its settlement terms with the US Internal Revenue Service, regarding relinquishing of confidential client records pertaining to the suspected tax cheats.
Meanwhile, issuing a cautious outlook for the next quarter, UBS said a "sustainable recovery is not yet visible."
