Skater Falls Through Thin Ice of Medicine Lake

A skater fell through thin ice in the middle of Medicine Lake in Plymouth Sunday around 2 p.m. and was rushed to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale. The police told that when the man was pulled out of the lake he was unconscious and had no pulse. They said he did not respond to resuscitation attempts but they have not confirmed his current condition.

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Water Patrol reported that another skater spotted a hat floating in the water in the middle of the lake and called the police at 1:50 p.m. Sgt. Chris Mathisen of the Sheriff's Department said the Water Patrol personnel found the man about 600 yards from shore wearing ice skates with a camera around his neck.

The authorities believe the man had recently moved to the Twin Cities from another state but has not been identified pending notification of relatives.

Mathisen said the area where he was skating, near French Regional Park off Rockford Road, had been open water on Saturday and froze overnight and Sunday’s snowfall could have made it appear thicker and safer than it actually was. "That's what we're guessing," Mathisen said. "He just got into a bad area. There's a lot of open water."

He added that ice fishermen on the lake Sunday reported the ice in their area as 4 to 6 inches thick. Both the Hennepin County Sheriff’s water patrol and the Plymouth Fire Department responded to the call and were at the scene. Crews are posting warning signs alerting others to thin ice on the lake.
