Blockbuster-Motorola team up to bring OnDemand movies to Motorola phones

Motorola

According to a Tuesday-announced deal between the Dallas-based streaming movie service provider Blockbuster, and the Schaumburg-based mobile phones maker Motorola, Blockbuster's OnDemand movie download service will be made available on select models of Motorola cell phones and smartphones.

Though the details about the Blockbuster-Motorola agreement - like the scheduled launch of the service, its cost, and the Motorola models that will carry the service - are still awaited, the teaming up of the two companies will provide Motorola users with an 'on-the-go' access to thousands of Hollywood movie titles.

It is assumed that the deal with Blockbuster has to do much with Motorola's expected unveiling of its new Android-powered smartphones in the fourth quarter, as multimedia capabilities will likely be the key features of those handsets.

The Blockbuster-Motorola deal comes at a time when both the companies are struggling to maintain their relevance in a marketplace literally swarming with digital content and mobile devices. Commenting on the deal, Kevin Lewis, Blockbuster's Senior VP of digital entertainment, said that the agreement with Motorola will ensure notable positioning of Blockbuster's application, which will use "progressive download" technology, on a Motorola phone screen.

Lewis added that there being "only a limited amount of really useful real estate on a mobile phone," Blockbuster will expectedly become "the easiest-to-access, most integrated entertainment provider on Motorola's handsets!"
