3D thriller ‘Final Destination’ retains lead at box office

According to studio estimates released on Sunday, Warner Bros’ 3D thriller ‘The Final Destination’ retained its lead at the US box office for the second consecutive weekend, fending off competition from Sandra Bullock's newest romantic comedy ‘All About Steve’.

Owing to its premium pricing for the 3D screenings, ‘The Final Destination’ - the fourth film of a horror franchise about catastrophic incidents - managed to raise $47.6 million during its 10-day haul as the box office champ.

Amid three weak new film releases, ‘All About Steve,’ starring Bullock as a lovelorn crossword-puzzle expert, ranked second and rose $11.2 million. The lower figures for the movie can be attributed to the fact that it played in only 2,251 theaters - nearly 900 less than the previous Bullock releases ‘The Proposal’ and ‘The Hangover,’ and even ‘The Final Destination.’

Slipping one place to the third position at the box office was Quentin Tarantino's World War II movie ‘Inglourious Basterds.’ The film, co-financed by Weinstein Co and General Electric Co's Universal Pictures, raised $10.8 million, with its three-week tally reaching $91 million.

The other two new releases for the week, both aimed essentially at male youngsters, ‘Gamer’ and ‘Extract’ opened at rank 4 and rank 10 respectively, with $9 million and nearly $4.2 million.

Meanwhile, at the five spot was ‘District 9’, an extra-terrestrial movie, produced by Peter Jackson, which took $7 million.
