New Head of Pharmaceuticals named by Roche

Tuesday saw Roche Holding AG calling a new head for its main pharmaceuticals division. This development occurred after the drug maker took full control of U. S.-based biotech firm Genentech earlier this year, in a deal worth $47 billion.

The responsibility of the flagship division will be taken by the recently-appointed Genentech Chief Executive Pascal Soriot, while replacing long-serving William Burns, who will move to the company's board next year. It was in April that Mr. Burns' retirement as the pharmaceutical's chief was announced.

Under his new responsibilities, Mr. Soriot will be required to take care of global commercial operations and marketing, production, development and registration.

Meanwhile, Daniel O'Day was also appointed by Roche to lead its diagnostics division. It should be noted that Juergen Schwiezer, who retires at the end of the year, will be replaced by Mr. O'Day. Soon Jonathan Knowles, who is responsible for the company's research, will also retire.

Roche CEO Severin Schwan said: "Following the conclusion of the Genentech integration, we will continue to bring innovative healthcare solutions to patients worldwide through diversity of research approaches and through efficient global development and commercialization. This broadened and younger corporate executive committee will continue to drive Roche's long-term vision as the world's leading biotech company."
