The Roadster version of Mini's Coupe Concept, revealed last month, now has a drop-top twin - the new, two-seat soft-top version, recently unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt motor show, which is expected to join its coupe counterpart in production!
The most recent addition to Mini's much-escalating range of modified models is essentially intended at taking on Mazda's big-selling MX-5 roadster. To be launched in
2100, the new Roadster will become the British brand's second drop-top, the first one being the Mini Cabriolet.
The front end of the new Roadster - including Cooper S chrome grille - resembles the familiar Mini family face; while the front quarter panels are akin to the Cabriolet, as are its length and width at 3714mm and 1683mm respectively. However, in terms of height, at 1356mm, the new open-topper is 58mm lower than Cabriolet, but is same as the new Coupe.
According to Mini, the opening and lowering of the new two-seater Roadster's compact roof not only helps reduce the car's weight, but also adds to its "puristic flair." Moreover, the car's lower and more steeply raked windscreen, vis-à-vis the Cabriolet windscreen, gives it a much choppier and sportier look.
The car has a small luggage compartment in the back, with room for 8.8 cubic feet of storage; and the stowing of the roof behind the headrests does not affect the car's 250 liters storage capacity.
