Around 32,000 Americans adults are reported to kill themselves annually but millions more think about it and a relatively huge number actually plan it, according to a national survey. In the year 2008, 3.7 percent of the adult population of U. S. tried to commit suicide.
Out of the total number of adults who thought of committing a suicide, about 2.3 million actually planned it out and about half actually attempted it as per the survey done by Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration found.
It was found that adults between the ages of 18-25 are most susceptible to suicidal thoughts. The survey involved 46,190 American adults. People with substance abuse disorders had a higher probability of suicidal thoughts.
"This study offers a far greater understanding of just how pervasive the risk of suicide is in our nation and how many of us are potentially affected by it", said Eric Broderick, the agency's acting administrator.
He said that there are organizations like National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-TALK) to turn for help during a crisis situation but the huge number revealed by this survey should be another reason to do everything that can be done as a nation to reduce these numbers by helping the ones who are at a risk to committing suicide.
A network of 140 crisis centers around the country is coordinated by The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline to provide help 24/7.
