Unhealthy eating habits and sedentary lifestyle not increases the risk of obesity but it also increases the risk of various diseases like diabetes. Recent data indicates that number of diabetics has increased more than 145,000 within a year.

The recent data was compiled on the basis of the information supplied by the GPs. Data analysis shows that more than 2.6 million people in the UK are now registered as diabetics whereas 5.2 million people were registered as obese hence the number of diabetics could increase as obese people have higher risk of diabetes.

Data also indicated that nearly 90% of people with diabetes have Type 2 diabetes which is result of unhealthy eating habits. It is also linked to obesity. Eight out of ten diabetics were overweight when their diabetes was diagnosed.

Diabetes UK chief executive Douglas Smallwood said: “Many, but not all, people with type 2 diabetes are overweight or obese, therefore we need to do all we can to raise awareness of diabetes and help people understand how following a balanced diet and leading an active lifestyle can help reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes.”
