Roku revamps set-top box lineup with two new models – SD and HD-XR

Roku

The existing set-top box lineup from Roku, which includes a branded $99 Netflix Instant streaming device, has been revamped with two new models - the entry-level SD and advanced HD-XR - as the company looks to expand further into the streaming media players' arena.

In addition to the $99-device, which provides the Netflix Instant streaming service in a fairly cheap, simple, and elegant way, the newly-announced devices will enable users to stream DVD- quality video not only from Netflix, but also from Amazon, Video On Demand as well as MLB. TV.

In addition, both the SD and HD-XR devices will also facilitate a 'direct' connection with any TV using standard HDMI or component video.

While the low-end $79-priced Roku SD only has standard definition output, the high-end $129-priced Roku HD-XR boasts a dual-band 802.11n compatible wireless.

Talking about both the new models, the Roku chief executive Anthony Wood said: "We're introducing a breakthrough price point with the launch of our Roku SD player. And the Roku HD-XR is the first Netflix-streaming device to embed next generation 802.11n dual-band wireless connectivity."

Roku's announcement of the two new players also included a mention of the company's intentions of launching a "Channel Store" feature later this fall which will likely offer additional content channels, and will come as a free and automatic update for all Roku customers.
