Google home page commemorates 40th anniversary of Sesame Street; features Motorola Droid link

In what can be termed as Google's latest promotional pitch on Friday, November 6, the Internet search giant's home page featured a link to push the new Android-based Motorola Droid smartphone that just hit the Verizon Wireless stores.

The Motorola Droid pitch was accompanied Google's commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the Sesame Street, for which it placed Burt and Ernie as its Doodles!

As a part of the tribute to the Sesame Street, Google had Big Bird's feet and lower body grace the home page on Wednesday, followed by the Cookie Monster snacking on the Google logo on Thursday - and, on Friday, there were Bert and Ernie serving as the O's in Google!

Meanwhile, pitching for the Droid, Google featured a blue button in the upper right-hand corner of its home page. The button - which resembled a software download button for Google Chrome or Google Sidewiki - actually led the users to the Verizon Wireless Droid splash Web page. In addition, the link below it took the users to yet another Droid page.

Though Google does not generally undertake product promotions on its home page, the recent Motorola Droid back-up by the Web search biggie follows its earlier move of using the home page to tout its Chrome browser, and also the G1 smartphone - which happened to be the first Android phone from T-Mobile!
