Shifting its focus from the front line- Maine, the Gay-marriage fight now heads to New Jersey. The democrat-rued legislature is under intense pressure to pass a bill endorsing same-sex marriage, which they want in practice before the Governor Jon Corzine ends his term in mid-January.
The ongoing tussle is between Corzine, a Democrat trounced in Tuesday's election and his successor Republican Chris Christie. While the former wants to sign such a bill, but his intensions is being turned down by Chris, who is totally against same-sex marriages.
Though, Corzine still holds the office for 10 weeks, both sides are intensifying efforts to advertise, lobby, and press supporters to contact legislators. The Garden State Equality, the state's largest gay rights advocate, earlier this week released a 60-second television commercial urging lawmakers to act on gay marriage. "New Jersey is at the very top of our list, and it's going to happen in the next few weeks if it happens at all.
They're doing it in a lame duck, because it's as far away from an election as possible", said Maggie Gallagher, the president of the National Organization for Marriage, which opposes same-sex marriages.
