Notwithstanding the initial reports of a less-than-overwhelming Droid reception, the opening weekend sales of the Motorola Droid were notably substantial - with the Verizon Wireless stores having sold approximately 100,000 Droids, and some stores almost having sold out of the newly-released smartphone!
However, in spite of the fact that the popular Apple iPhone reported comparatively much better sales figures for its opening weekend, one of the analysts opined that the Droid is "doing fine."
Refraining from disclosing the exact Droid sales numbers for the opening weekend, the spokeman of the device's exclusive carrier Verizon said that "a lot" of Droids were sold, and the company was "very pleased" with the early returns.
Putting the Friday-through-Sunday sales figures of the Droid at nearly 100,000 - or almost 50 percent of the 200,000 Droids supplied by Motorola to Verizon store -, Broadpoint AmTech analyst Mark McKechnie told Bloomberg. com that the early sales figures of the device can be termed as "encouraging."
Meanwhile, commenting on the opening weekend sales, Nielsen analyst Roger Entner said: "Selling 100,000 is a little troubling, since the Droid is supposed to rival the iPhone." However, noting that "People still haven't gotten what the Droid is supposed to be," Entner projected an improvement in the sales figures once potential customers become increasingly aware of the impressive capabilities of the Droid.
