Issuing an open letter to its customers on Friday, AT&T hit back at Verizon's TV commercials, which claim that Verizon has more 3G coverage areas vis-à-vis AT&T; and said that it intends setting the record straight with Verizon.
Having already filed a lawsuit against Verizon, alleging that its 3G-focused ads are "blatantly false and misleading," AT&T is seeking a temporary injunction for banning the ads from being aired, as well as undisclosed monetary damages to make up for the loss of "incalculable market share."
Clarifying the coverage area statistics to its customers, AT&T said in its letter that its 3G wireless data coverage is available to nearly 75 percent, or 233 million, people in the US. In addition, the letter also notes that the EDGE and GPRS networks offered by AT&T respectively serve over 300 million people each.
The letter, which is inclusive of a link to an AT&T coverage map, also points out the fact that AT&T also has nearly two times the number of smartphone customers, as compared to Verizon.
Though the letter does not make any specific mention of the Apple iPhone, it says that AT&T is associated with the most popular smartphones and more wireless apps, over and above top 3G speeds.
In addition, AT&T has also drawn customers' attention to its voice communications facility alongside sending emails and Web surfing.
