Despite the fact that the blogosphere is abuzz with rumors about a Google-branded, Google-sold Android device being a near-certainty, there have been vehement denials by the company about such a possibility.
With tech pages of Google News featuring headlines like “Get Ready for the Google Phone,” and “Google Building Its Own Android Phone,” one may deduce that a Google phone is on the way; but, most of the rumors apparently are far less accurate than they initially appear.
Ever since the rumors about a likely Google phone emerged some weeks back, Google has been rebuffing the notion as little more than “market rumor,” more so in the present times, when its Android platform is gaining momentum.
Last month, Andy Rubin, Google’s VP of engineering for Android, had told CNET that Google was “not making hardware;” about which a CNET report had said: “Rubin scoffed at the notion that the company would 'compete with its customers' by releasing its own phone.”
Further, expressing skepticism about a Google-branded phone in the near future, William Stofega, IDC program manager for mobile device technology and trends, said that the rumored move might lead to disinterest of the mobile carriers supporting Android.
About Android’s increasing popularity, Stofega said: “It's all the rage. I think that there are a lot of handset vendors that are saying this is a good opportunity to leverage a growing base of users.”
