Toyota Motor may Feel Major Impact on Profit due to Recall

As per the industry experts the cost the largest recall would definitely be raised if Toyota Motor Corp.'s decides to go beyond replacing floor mats; however it might contain any damage in the marketplace.

From January onwards, dealers will slash approximately an inch off the lower edge of the gas pedal and adjust the width. From April, replacement pedals would be available.

In short term, that might not cost much. However, the automaker is to reconfigure the floor surface beneath the pedal on some of the vehicles being recalled, in order to create more space between the pedal and the floor.

The vehicles to be recalled include 2005 through 2010 model-year Toyota Avalons and 2007 through 2010 Camrys and Lexus ES350s. Furthermore, a new brake override system is also to be fitted in those three models, along with the Lexus IS250 and IS350.

Though it is confirmed that those fixes will add up, Toyota did not reveal a cost.

David Cole, chairman of the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor, expressed, "If you have to dig into the vehicle like in the powertrain or under the dash, the cost is high, even if the part cost is low."

It was discovered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that just 72% of affected owners bring their vehicles in for prescribed repairs on most of the recalls. This clearly means that dealers might witness 2.7 million of the 3.8 million vehicles recalled, which is more than Toyota's total U. S. sales in the pre-recession year of 2007.

After unexpected hike in Toyota or Lexus vehicles, at least a dozen fatalities have occurred.
